We get many calls from homeowners regarding rodents living in their attics and crawlspaces. People ask us to come and clean up the droppings, remove contaminated insulation, sanitize the attic, rodent-proof their home, and install clean, sustainable, certified green, insulation.

Since we service many cites in northern and southern California plus the Seattle/Olympia area we know the rats are up 21% this year. Rat experts believe it’s because the economy is good and humans throw out much more food than before.

If your attic or crawlspace has rats/mice or other rodents, the air from those spaces may be entering your home and you, your pets, and loved ones are breathing contaminated air as you sleep, eat, relax, or exercise in your home.

Rats are Becoming Immune to Poisons.

Scientists began reporting in 2009 that rats are becoming immune to most poisons. Rats are evolving three times faster than humans. The new Super Rats are developing more immunity with each new generation. A new generation is born every twelve weeks. Rats are able to breed as early as just twelve weeks old. Every twelve weeks the rats and their offspring return to your attic and give birth to a new generation of super rats.

Breathing in Dust Contaminated with rodent urine or droppings is how some diseases spread.

Rats and mice carry fleas, mites, and several disease that you can catch by breathing in dust contaminated with rodent urine or droppings.

Some of our clients report having asthma that is worse when they’re at home. Many times this is because, according to the CDC, breathing dust contaminated with rodent hairs (one rats sheds over one million hairs a year), Rodent hairs, rodent urine, or droppings can cause or exacerbate asthma. Especially in children and the elderly.

Rat poisons can Kill pets and wildlife.

If your cat or dog eats a rat or mouse it may get accidentally poisoned by rodenticides used in rat and mouse baits. Wildlife such as Owls and Hawks can die from the poison that’s in a rat or mouse they consume. Protect these beautiful birds who help us by eating rats and mice. A large owl family can eat up to 2170 rats and mice in a breeding season while they raise their young owlets.

Don’t make it easy for rodents like mice or rats to move in to your attic or crawlspace. Plug all holes using Pro-Materials like steel wire mesh and rodent resistant foam. Rats and mice can smell the air coming out of holes in your attic and crawlspace. Rats and mice will follow each other’s urine and dropping trails into your home.

Rats can climb up a wall

Even though rats can climb straight up most walls don’t make it easy for them by having trees or ivy growing on or close to the house. Cutting back trees and ivy can expose the rats to predators. Taking away the rats hiding place by pruning trees and vines. Owls and hawks will be able to see the rats on your roof and have a better chance of catching the rats and eating them.

Rats are hard to Trap

Most rats are Leary of anything new in their environment so trapping them can be tricky. Mice are much more curious than rats and will examine anything new but the rats will avoid the new trap. You may want to pre-bait the traps over a period of weeks so the rats become comfortable with the trap. Then you can set it and trap the rats. Most people don’t want to pay an exterminator every month to come and trap the latest generation of rodents. Most people want the rodents to leave and not return. Rodent proofing with Pro-materials and cleaning up the rodent droppings and nests are the safest and most effective way to keep rodents out of your home and away from your family.

We do Rodent proofing, attic and crawlspace clean up, sanitizing, air-sealing, and installation of new insulation. Remove Food Sources

Rats and mice can easily chew through plastic, wood, paper, cardboard, and drywall. Pet food and birdseed should be stored in metal containers. Birdseed should be cleaned up daily from under your bird feeder. Bring your bird feeder in at night so that rats don’t climb on it and have a feast. Pick up fruit that falls from trees. Avocados, apples, pears, nectarines, and peaches are some favorite rat foods. Cover your fruit trees with a net and place a rat guard around the trunk to keep the rats off of the trees. Pick the fruit right away when it ripens. Clean up any fruit that falls on the ground. Prune trees back so they don’t touch structures and make it easy for rats to get on your roof.

Keep Rodents out of your Home.

Plug any home that you can put a pencil in. If a rat can stick his mouth in the hole the rat can chew and make the hole bigger. Rats and mice can collapse their rib cage and squeeze into your home. Rats have teeth as strong as iron and a bite as powerful as a crocodile. (7,000 pounds per square inch) After they get in they can destroy your home from the inside and spread diseases and parasites. Diseases like Hantavirus, Meningitis, Plague from fleas, mites, ticks, or even asthma.
